MODEL MOMENT: NAOMI, LINDA, KATE, AND CHRISTY COVER INTERVIEW MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2013

25 Aug

Interview-September-2013

Have my eyes deceived me? Is this a sign of covers to come? I want to scream with excitement because I can finally post a Model Moment segment with real life models!!!!!! And these aren’t just any models…. these are SUPERMODELS!! The supermodel rat pack, which consisted of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell, strutted and posed their way to the top of the high fashion runway model food chain in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Kate Moss was apart of it as well, but I will always have a soft spot for the model trinity of Turlington, Evangelista and Campbell.

Also along for the ride Stephanie Seymour, Daria Werbowy, and Amber Valletta. The photos were shot by Mert & Marcus for the 2013 September issue of Interview, aptly titled The Model Issue. If you remember they also shot Cara Delevingne for W magazine’s 2013 September issue.

I cannot wait to get my hands on one! In order for this to continue people have to buy the issues to show these publications that you’d rather see a model than a celeb on the covers. W and Interview got it right, this is what September issues should look like!

Is this the return of models on magazines? And what’s next in the wonderful world of fashion… actual designers instead of the celebrity ones?!  A girl can dream can’t she….

SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK: BROOKE SHIELDS

13 Jun

brooke shields

I really love doing the SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK segments every week. I get a sense of excitement every Thursday and it makes me happy to know that this segment is becoming a constant staple on Miss Monet. With that being said let us get into this weeks flashback, Brooke Shields.

Shields began modeling in 1966 at just 11 months old, landing her first job for Ivory Soap.  She carried on a successful career as a child model working for Eileen Ford, who later stated that she started the children’s division of Ford Models strictly for Shields.

Shields found great success in the 80’s, becoming the youngest model ever to debut on the cover of VOGUE, and proceeded to dominate the magazine for an astonishing 14 covers.  After becoming a cover model, she went on to  appear in print and TV ads for Calvin Klein, all at the age of 14. The ads for Calvin Klein Jeans, featured Shields using the famous tagline “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”  Both Shields and Klein’s careers catapulted after the ads aired, even though they were deemed too controversial.

By the age of 16 Shields had done what most models try to do, transition from modeling to acting. While others struggle to accomplish or even maintain both, Shields had done it without breaking a sweat. Thanks to movies like Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon, Hollywood was very familiar with her and not just because of her face. In February 1981, Time magazine reported that her day rate as a model was $10,000. And by the end of 1983, Shields was on the covers of PARIS VOGUEAMERICAN VOGUE , and  ITALIAN VOGUE all between the months of September through December.

Brooke Shields was the face of the 80’s, became the sitcom- actress of the 90’s and an advocate for postpartum depression in the new millennium. She has long surpassed the careers of her peers and has proven that she is more than just a pretty face.

SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK: DONYALE LUNA

6 Jun

luna5

She was declared the “reincarnation of Nefertiti” by Salvador Dali. She partied with the best of them at Studio 54. She appeared in several films produced by Andy Warhol and obtained a one year contract to be photographed by Richard Avedon. She was the first black model to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and British Vogue. Donyale Luna took the fashion industry by storm, and although it was brief, her legacy of exotic features and quirky personality transcends for generations.

Born in Detroit as Peggy Anne Freeman,  Luna was known to stand apart amongst her peers, in looks and attitude. She created her own world, a new name and a different race and heritage to go along with it. Her new persona brought her fame and fortune fast. Discovered in 1964 by photographer David McCabe, she left Detroit for New York. While in New York, McCabe introduced her to Nancy White. White was so stunned by her look she had Luna sketched immediately, and that illustration landed on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in January 1965.

Luna’s name and face had catapulted her into “IT” girl status very quickly. After the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, Luna was given a one-year contract with Bazaar’s staff photographer, Richard Avedon. The first pictures of Luna debuted in a historic six-page spread in the April 1965 edition of the magazine. Time magazine had also begun to take notice of Luna, by publishing an article titled, ‘The Luna Year’. The article described, the blue, sometimes, green- eyed contact lenses and blonde wig wearing model as “a new heavenly body who, because of her striking singularity, promises to remain on high for many a season. Donyale Luna, as she calls herself, is unquestionably the hottest model in Europe at the moment. She is only 20, a Negro, hails from Detroit, and is not to be missed.”

Just like Pat Cleveland, racism in America was starting to catch up with Luna. Avedon’s photos of Luna had prompted southern states to pull their advertising in Bazaar, readers had cancelled subscriptions, and even the owner of Bazaar, William Randolph Hearst did not approve, Avedon “was never permitted to photograph her for publication again”. So she fled to London, where she received even more success than she had in the states. Soon photographers were lining up to get a shot of the exotic beauty. The March 1966 cover of British Vogue was a turning point in the fashion world. Shot by David Bailey it featured Luna, the first black model to ever grace the cover of Vogue.

Drugs are what ultimately led to Luna’s demise in the fashion world and eventually in her life. She partied tremendously and found a love for LSD. She became unreliable and hard to work with. Her unprofessional behavior, prompted fellow black model Beverley Johnson to complain by saying ” “[she] doesn’t wear shoes winter or summer. Ask her where she’s from — Mars? She went up and down the runways on her hands and knees. She didn’t show up for bookings. She didn’t have a hard time, she made it hard for herself.”

luna

Donyale Luna. There are still very many holes in her biography, such as, her heritage. Luna tried  her best to not be seen as black and even though she clearly suffered insecurity issues, I still have admiration.  Her meteoric rise to the top of the fashion world is very inspirational and her inevitable fall is a cautionary tale that needs to be told.  She is largely forgotten in the fashion world and that is not fair. Even though her career was brief, she still made a name for herself and cemented historic moments in fashion and black history, all of which deserves to be recognized.

Just last Thursday, I paid homage to Pat Cleveland and all her achievements by featuring her as  the SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK of the week. And what perfect timing that was, considering she is featured in the lookbook for  Zac Posen Resort 2014. Starring alongside her is her gorgeous daughter Anna.

“I was really proud to be shooting mother and daughter Pat and Anna Cleveland. “It was a magic moment. It felt so iconic. I felt like we were expanding for the public the age range of how fashion is shown today.”  – Zac Posen

SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK: PAT CLEVELAND

30 May

pat cleveland

In this week’s edition of SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK, we take a look back at the internationally acclaimed and legendary supermodel,  Pat Cleveland. Discovered in 1967, Cleveland had no desire to be a model, her passion was fashion design. Although, her designs got her featured in Vogue, it was her look that had Ebony magazine wanting her for their national runway tour, Fashion Fair.

pat cleveland

Cleveland was definitely a sight to see on the 60’s and 70’s modeling scene. Entering an industry that showcased mostly white models, Pat stood out like a sore thumb. Born with an African American, Native American, Swedish and Irish ancestry, there were very few women who looked like her at that time. She was light-skinned, tall and slender, with black wavy hair that she often referred to as her “magic carpet”.

pat clevelandDespite success in America, Cleveland became tired of being singled out due to racism. So she left for Paris vowing never to return until US VOGUE printed a black model on the cover. While in Paris she modeled for the world’s top designers such as Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler and Christian Dior. On the runways is where she really shined, her appearances were like theatrical performances, her walk and presentation of the clothing was something that could never be duplicated.  “When she moved, she painted the air around her with the clothes,”- Janice Dickinson.

Pat Cleveland delivered something the fashion industry had never seen at that time. She was different and because of her perseverance she introduced the world to a look that is now celebrated. She changed the game for models past and present. Pat Cleveland, a supermodel for the ages!

SPOTLIGHT: JOAN SMALLS

7 Feb

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Spotlight segment. That’s because I haven’t been inspired or motivated by anything or anyone as of late. The last segment was on ColorBlind Magazine and before that, the very first one, was on fashion illustrator Hayden Williams. This months spotlight will feature Joan Smalls.  joan smalls 1

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the name Joan Smalls, especially if you follow the fashion industry, and even if you don’t I’m positive that you have seen her gorgeous face.  The 24 year old Puerto Rican stunner, has been modeling since 2007 when she signed with Elite Model Management, now she resides, like the greats before her, at IMG. Having walked in countless runway shows for some of the biggest names in fashion, Ms. Smalls got her exclusive high fashion start in Paris for the Givenchy couture show, the rest is supermodel history. Now, you cannot turn a page in a magazine without seeing her featured in an ad. She is the face of Gucci, David Yurman, Estee Lauder, and did a fabulous spread for Fendi shot by Karl Lagerfeld to name a few. Joan Smalls for David Yurman

joan smalls 3

For a long time I have always been captivated by Ms. Smalls but aside from her  striking presence and signature walk, I could never figure out why I was drawn to her, until I saw her on MTV’s “This Is How I made it”. The interview she gave, telling how she made it, her setbacks and how she persevered was so inspiring, I felt as if she was speaking to me. I will always be motivated by hard working women who strive for greatness and never give up on their dreams. That is why February’s Spotlight  is flashing brightly on Ms. Joan Smalls.

Check out a clip of her on ‘This Is How I Made It’
