16 Jul
The Mojito Shoe Classic in electric blue.

The Mojito Shoe Classic in electric blue.

I’m a sucker for fashion that stands out which is why the decision to do this Shoe Porn feature was such an easy one. Allow me to introduce you to the Mojito, a stylish offering that is sure to quench your fashion thirst. The Mojito was conceived from the creative mind of London architect Julian Hakes, “It is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot, sweeps over the bridge, then down below the heel before twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel”.

mojito2Hakes and his innovative edition have taken the fashion world by storm, winning the Drapers Footwear and Accessories Award in 2012 and appearing on countless style blogs and features in magazines such as Elle UK, Vogue UK, USA Today and many others. A definite conversation piece these eye-catching shoes are a work of art and apparently comfortable too. Made from carbon fiber, leather & laminated with rubber, these shoes provide strong support with every strut.

I had the pleasure of seeing the Mojito in an email I received from Cityblis, an online fashion mecca that showcases the creative talent of designers and provides them with the tools to build their brand, and a pleasure it was.  This showstopper is available on the Cityblis website for $275, a steal for such a unique and timeless piece of fashion. Ladies and gentlemen the FUTURE OF FOOTWEAR IS HERE.

FASHION WEEK: ATELIER VERSACE FALL COUTURE 2013/2014

4 Jul

I could not talk about Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week without giving a nod to Donatella Versace. The Atelier Versace Fall Couture show made its grand  debut on Monday and grand it was. Naomi Campbell opened the show giving an early indication of just what this collection was all about, GLAMOUR and CONFIDENCE.  Versace found inspiration from the black-and-white photography of the thirties,  “Horst and Man Ray”, she said.  Precision, perfection and work went into this collection and it didn’t go unnoticed.

FASHION WEEK: BALMAIN RESORT 2014

Who knew houndstooth and overalls could look so stylish? Apparently Olivier Rousteing! Balmain’s HDIC (Head Designer in Charge) proved 3 things: 1. Houndstooth will never get old. 2. Overalls are definitely back! And 3. Balmain is and will always be one of my favorite fashion houses! The Resort Collection only proves how crazy in love I am with Olivier and Balmain!

SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK: BROOKE SHIELDS

13 Jun

brooke shields

I really love doing the SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK segments every week. I get a sense of excitement every Thursday and it makes me happy to know that this segment is becoming a constant staple on Miss Monet. With that being said let us get into this weeks flashback, Brooke Shields.

Shields began modeling in 1966 at just 11 months old, landing her first job for Ivory Soap.  She carried on a successful career as a child model working for Eileen Ford, who later stated that she started the children’s division of Ford Models strictly for Shields.

Shields found great success in the 80’s, becoming the youngest model ever to debut on the cover of VOGUE, and proceeded to dominate the magazine for an astonishing 14 covers.  After becoming a cover model, she went on to  appear in print and TV ads for Calvin Klein, all at the age of 14. The ads for Calvin Klein Jeans, featured Shields using the famous tagline “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”  Both Shields and Klein’s careers catapulted after the ads aired, even though they were deemed too controversial.

By the age of 16 Shields had done what most models try to do, transition from modeling to acting. While others struggle to accomplish or even maintain both, Shields had done it without breaking a sweat. Thanks to movies like Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon, Hollywood was very familiar with her and not just because of her face. In February 1981, Time magazine reported that her day rate as a model was $10,000. And by the end of 1983, Shields was on the covers of PARIS VOGUEAMERICAN VOGUE , and  ITALIAN VOGUE all between the months of September through December.

Brooke Shields was the face of the 80’s, became the sitcom- actress of the 90’s and an advocate for postpartum depression in the new millennium. She has long surpassed the careers of her peers and has proven that she is more than just a pretty face.

Bahraini designer Sofia Al Asfoor is the creative genius behind the coveted bag, simply known as The Shield. What is The Shield you ask? Sofia grew up in the Arabian Gulf and attended the  London College of Fashion, New York’s Parsons, and Istituto Europeo di Design where she perfected her love of luxury goods. Between her talent and education, it isn’t surprising to know she is very hands on with her designs. All of the bags are hand crafted with the finest choice in leathers. Aside from the exotic collection, which features exotic leathers such as ostrich, the classic shield is made of “Calf leather lined with lamb skin”.  Pyramids are the signature symbol of these bags and are definitely a 3-D fashion statement that stands apart amongst other designers’ work.

The Classic Shield. “I have worked with tanneries on creating a unique “blue” processed exclusively for my collections, and that blue is the statement colour of the brand.”

FASHION NEWS: SARAH JESSICA PARKER + MANOLO BLAHNIK = BEST COLLABORATION EVER!

8 Jun

sjp

Carrie Bradshaw is back and she’s here to stay!  Sarah Jessica Parker is teaming up with Manolo Blahnik.Yes those Manolos! The same shoes that became a constant staple and instant fashion hit for six seasons on ‘Sex and the City’. The actress and the CEO of Manolo Blahnik, George Malkemuso are creating a line of bags, shoes, and trenches. During an interview with VOGUE, Parker announced the news saying,  “In a silly way, I think it’s what people have expected of me most because of Carrie Bradshaw.”

sjp

So what can fans and fashionistas expect from the new line, aptly titled ‘SJP’? Well, for starters the line will run exclusively at Nordstrom early next year. The line will feature pumps and flats which will run between $200 and $300. “Because I got to play that role, I wore a lot of shoes,” Parker said. “And by  default I learned an enormous amount. It’s hard to walk away from that.”

Carrie Bradshaw!

Carrie Bradshaw!

Bags and trenches are also part of the fashionable menu.  “We’re putting new colors together that people don’t typically do, just  beautiful combinations that you wish existed in your closet.”  Don’t be surprised if your bag has a vintage feel to them, Parker is getting inspiration from “the period of the seventies into the  eighties”.

So, SJP is bringing Carrie back! Some call this irony, I call it fashion fate! 2014 is looking better than ever!

Are you as excited to hear this as I am?  Will the SJP Collection be a MESS or a YES?

SUPERMODEL FLASHBACK: DONYALE LUNA

6 Jun

luna5

She was declared the “reincarnation of Nefertiti” by Salvador Dali. She partied with the best of them at Studio 54. She appeared in several films produced by Andy Warhol and obtained a one year contract to be photographed by Richard Avedon. She was the first black model to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and British Vogue. Donyale Luna took the fashion industry by storm, and although it was brief, her legacy of exotic features and quirky personality transcends for generations.

Born in Detroit as Peggy Anne Freeman,  Luna was known to stand apart amongst her peers, in looks and attitude. She created her own world, a new name and a different race and heritage to go along with it. Her new persona brought her fame and fortune fast. Discovered in 1964 by photographer David McCabe, she left Detroit for New York. While in New York, McCabe introduced her to Nancy White. White was so stunned by her look she had Luna sketched immediately, and that illustration landed on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in January 1965.

The January 1965 cover.

Luna’s name and face had catapulted her into “IT” girl status very quickly. After the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, Luna was given a one-year contract with Bazaar’s staff photographer, Richard Avedon. The first pictures of Luna debuted in a historic six-page spread in the April 1965 edition of the magazine. Time magazine had also begun to take notice of Luna, by publishing an article titled, ‘The Luna Year’. The article described, the blue, sometimes, green- eyed contact lenses and blonde wig wearing model as “a new heavenly body who, because of her striking singularity, promises to remain on high for many a season. Donyale Luna, as she calls herself, is unquestionably the hottest model in Europe at the moment. She is only 20, a Negro, hails from Detroit, and is not to be missed.”

Just like Pat Cleveland, racism in America was starting to catch up with Luna. Avedon’s photos of Luna had prompted southern states to pull their advertising in Bazaar, readers had cancelled subscriptions, and even the owner of Bazaar, William Randolph Hearst did not approve, Avedon “was never permitted to photograph her for publication again”. So she fled to London, where she received even more success than she had in the states. Soon photographers were lining up to get a shot of the exotic beauty. The March 1966 cover of British Vogue was a turning point in the fashion world. Shot by David Bailey it featured Luna, the first black model to ever grace the cover of Vogue.

Drugs are what ultimately led to Luna’s demise in the fashion world and eventually in her life. She partied tremendously and found a love for LSD. She became unreliable and hard to work with. Her unprofessional behavior, prompted fellow black model Beverley Johnson to complain by saying ” “[she] doesn’t wear shoes winter or summer. Ask her where she’s from — Mars? She went up and down the runways on her hands and knees. She didn’t show up for bookings. She didn’t have a hard time, she made it hard for herself.”

luna

Donyale Luna. There are still very many holes in her biography, such as, her heritage. Luna tried  her best to not be seen as black and even though she clearly suffered insecurity issues, I still have admiration.  Her meteoric rise to the top of the fashion world is very inspirational and her inevitable fall is a cautionary tale that needs to be told.  She is largely forgotten in the fashion world and that is not fair. Even though her career was brief, she still made a name for herself and cemented historic moments in fashion and black history, all of which deserves to be recognized.
