DESIGNER OF THE MONTH: PHILLIP LIM

1 Sep

Designer, Phillip Lim had no idea how big his name was going to be when he debuted his first fall collection in February 2005. Fast- forward to 2013 and 3.1 Phillip Lim is seen on the bodies of celebrities, in countless issues of Vogue, and on September 15, the clothing racks of Target.

Born in Thailand in 1973, Lim had no idea that designing was his calling. “I never equated the love of clothes with being a fashion designer. In fact, being a fashion designer was not in my universe, it was only about how clothes made me feel and the potential I saw in changing the clothes I owned. I can remember as early as 8 years old, picking out my own clothes, asking my mother to alter the clothes I had, and the passion I felt when I would have the perfect outfit.” That passion led him to become the creative genius that singlehandedly transformed the world of fashion by offering designer quality pieces at contemporary prices.

Lim took on an internship at Katayone Adeli which, later, turned into a job as a design assistant. From there he went on to design for Paul Frank Industries before launching Development in 2000 with business partners Andy Crane and Stuart Gaddis. Development was a small label created for the girl in her twenties who appreciates a more simple design with easy shapes and basic colors. Lim spent his weekends working out of a garage to build the line he helped create, the first collection brought in six figures worth of orders, a definite premonition of the many successes to come.

4 years and some creative differences later, Lim had ended his tenure with Development. He was unemployed for a mere 24 hours when he received a call and plane ticket to New York from longtime friend, and CEO of a textile manufacturing company that worked with Development, Wen Zhou. 3 days, a taxi cab, and $750,000 later 3.1 Phillip Lim was born, the 3.1 symbolized their age at the time.

3.1 Phillip Lim debuted in February 2005, showcasing a fall collection that instantly won over journalists and buyers alike. After the success of the fall line, Lim created an accessories collection in September of the same year. From that point on the successes were one after another for the label, with Lim collecting countless awards. Buyers were filling up boutiques and department stores, within six months, sales reached $2.8 million, everyone wanted a piece of his “classic, but twisted” style. Along with the womenswear and accessories line, he also launched menswear, childrenswear, swimwear, lingerie, and even an organic clothing line aptly titled, Go Green Go.

FASHION TURN ON: THE ECLECTIC STYLINGS OF MIGUEL

30 May

miguel

Three words come to mind when I see Miguel  : ECLECTIC,  EDGY and EVER-EVOLVING.  Not since Prince, has there been an artist so innovative with his music as well as his fashion. Typing the phrase ‘Miguel Fashion Style’ into Google and watching his video for Adorn and the newly How Many Drinks, only  further cemented my belief that he is a fashion icon in his own right.

miguel

Every true artist has their signature style. For Michael Jackson it was the glove, for Beyoncé its the wind machine, I mean you didn’t really think her hair blew like that on it’s own did you? And for Miguel it’s a leather jacket and stylish sunglasses that never leaves his side.  I love a man in a suit, however a suit and tie doesn’t always equate to style. And what draws me to Miguel, is the fact that he has his own unique style that he created to cater to his very unique personality.

miguel

The R ‘n’ B rock star has such a futuristic take on fashion, it’s not a shock that he admires Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris.  “I’m a huge fan of Hedi Slimane’s photography. I want to meet this dude, and the fact that he’s running Saint Laurent, a Parisian brand, from Los Angeles makes it extra ill to me.”

miguel

Another thing that sets him apart from the rest is the fact that he knows the importance of accessorizing and… how to do it. Yes, straight men can benefit from accessorizing too. You will always see him with a statement necklace or ring to complete his look. His favorite pieces include his John Lennon-style Ray-Bans, a Cast of Vices ring, white gold Cartier bracelets and rings, and a wallet chain by the Great Frog.

Miguel

Miguel is the definition of individuality, his confidence shines through not only in his music, but also in his style.  In a world filled with men dressing the same because they are too afraid of being considered ‘gay’ to try something different, Miguel is a breath of fresh air. He’s a visual voice for the stylishly challenged, proving that the only way you can achieve your own signature style is with confidence.

And that is the perfect FASHION TURN ON for me!

Is Miguel changing the way men dress? Is his style a MESS or a YES??

FASHION TURN ON: JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE’S STYLE EVOLUTION

JT1

N*SYNC. JUSTIFIED. FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS. THE 20/20 EXPERIENCE.

Hi, my name is Miss Monet  and I have an addiction to Justin Timberlake! His musical resume is quite impressive, but what impresses me even more is his newly adopted look. Music and style go hand in hand; you can’t have one without the other. That would be like having peanut butter without jelly, or a suit without a tie (no pun intended). Majority of people won’t even remember an artist for their performance; they’ll remember it from what that artist was wearing. Lady Gaga anyone? My point is there is no music without style, and luckily, Mr. JT has successfully found a way to merge the two.

jt3

Watching him ignite the stage at this year’s Grammy’s was proof that this is a new and improved Justin. The 20/20 Experience is such a mature sound and it is only fitting that with a new sound comes a new look. I love it when artists evolve for the better, it makes them more relatable. Gone are the days of the curly blonde hair and cornrows, the outlandish boy band getups or that God-awful matching denim outfit that he wore with Britney.

Bringing StyleBack.  Currently, being dubbed the new Cary Grant, or Frank Sinatra, JT has proven that he is every stylists and designers dream come true. Tom Ford, who has lent his talents to Justin’s new style, was shocked to know that style and class still exist with the younger generation.  “When you’re someone in your early 50s, and a major global pop star who’s barely 30 identifies with your style and wants you to make all his clothes, you think, ‘I’m still valid,’ ” Mr. Ford said.  “These kids grew up in a generation of baggy shorts and baggy athletic clothes, and now they want some kind of little formal touch to something,” he added. “They want the glamour of suits and ties.”

FASHION WEARABOUTS: KING BEY IN PRE-FALL 2013 EMILIO PUCCI

21 Jan

“Photo shoot fresh. Lookin like wealth, I’m bout to call the paparazzi on myself”. – Jay Z “Otis”.

Beyonce in Emilio Pucci

Beyonce and Jay-Z look like the ultimate power couple, which only makes sense, since they attended the 57th Presidential Inaugural Ceremony for President Barack Obama. A lot of critics or should I say fans are saying Mrs. Carter was too dressed up for the occasion, some even saying “she should have worn this to the Inaugural ball”.  But I strongly disagree! She looks great, in this custom created Emilio Pucci Pre-Fall 2013 black velvet and chiffon beaded cutout long- sleeved gown and Christian Dior fur coat.  It would have been too predictable for her to have gone with a simpler dress and predictable and fashion does not mix well. Let us remember ladies and gents,There’s no such thing as being over-dressed.”

Oh and Mr. Carter out did himself in his Tom Ford  suit. Very dapper Hov I’m impressed!

Fashion in Review: BEST OF 2012: BEST TRENDS

31 Dec

Ok so, 2012 is pretty much over. Midnight will bring in a whole new year of hopes, dreams, and of course fashion!! I am certainly excited to bring in a new year and even more excited to see the new styles, trends, and fashions that will dominate 2013. In my last post I touched on my favorite designers of 2012, now let’s take a look back at a few of the best trends of the past year….

BEST….

Menswear. Women are the new men”, in more ways than one obviously. One of my favorite trends of the year was menswear, partly because I love mens clothing and another part because… I love mens clothing. But seriously, I love the empowering, masculine edge that women give off when they are wearing the tailored fashion trend.  A hint of masculine to compliment your feminine, because let’s face it ladies we all have those days when we just want to be one of the boys.

Prints. I love a good print on any piece of fabric!! This trend was by far my favorite of the year! Who knew houndstooth could spark such a comback? Or abstract shapes that you learned about in art or geometry class would make a blouse look so nice? Decorative fabrics like brocade, jacquard, baroque, and velvet graced not only the fall runway shows but stores and closets everywhere.

Brights. Color color everywhere and so much more was spared this year. Basic blacks and boring browns took a backseat as neon colors invaded stores and bodies everywhere with little to no fading insight.  Bright bold colors in everything from handbags to nail polish were so vibrant your closet resembled a box of crayons.

Peplum. An oldie but goodie. Peplum has made a strong comeback between this season and last season, even though it never really went out of style to begin with, this season a lot of women were willing to try the flared, ruffled masterpiece. Sexy, classy, elegant, and chic all wrapped up in one!

Leather and Oxblood. Nothing defined the end of the year quite like leather and the color oxblood. It signified the start of the fall season, appearing countless times on the runways, in magazines, and on your favorite celebs. What I love about this trend is the many different looks it gives off. Leather can be dressed up or down, it is also capable of possesing a tough or girly approach, two things which I feel make up a little of who I am. Oxblood, often called maroon or burgundy, was the color of the season. It’s part of the red family, think of it as a cool cousin you don’t get to see that often, but when you do you always have a great time. The color was everywhere; on leather, pants, blouses, nail polishes, and my new favorite obsession…. lipstick. Oxblood: a warm, rich, slightly darker hue that makes any and all skin tones shimmer.

Have a safe and fabulous New Year!!

Stylishly Yours,

Miss Monet

FASHION TURN ON: THE IMPECCABLE STYLE OF CHUCK BASS

12 Dec

Ever watch a tv show and fall in love with the character? Come on, it’s happened to all of us before.  It is only natural to grow an attachment to what you see on a regular basis, even if what or who you are seeing isn’t even real. So, who am I crushing on lately? Or, should I say “style crushing” on? Well, my beauties, it is none other than Chuck Bass.  Yes, the Chuck Bass, from the soon to be retired show Gossip Girl (the series finale airs on Dec 17th at 9pm).  Now, I must confess, I have not watched the entire series. Actually, I have only gotten to the middle of season 2 thanks to syndication on the Style Network, however, I was an avid reader of the book series written by Cecily Von Ziegeasar, and while reading the series, Chuck Bass was nothing like he is on screen. They say books to movies or books to tv shows, in this case, are never good. On the contrary, if it weren’t for this show making its way to the small screen, my eyes would have never had the privilege to behold the amazing stylish man that is Chuck Bass. So, besides his wealth, power, business attitude, sex appeal, humor, and wit, let us take a look at why I really have a crush on Chuck Bass.

P.S.

They say the man makes the clothes, so I guess Ed Westwick, embodies everything that is Chuck Bass. Hmmm…. Maybe he’s born with it……
