great gatsby

The most fashionable film of the year is here! Baz Luhrmann’s long awaited adaptation of The Great Gatsby has finally arrived, putting the classic book by F. Scott Fitzgerald back into the spotlight. I’m not here to give you an english lit reading assignment, I’m here to discuss the best part of the film….. the fashions. From Tiffany’s to Brooks Brothers, this movie has sparked the return of 1920’s fashions that’s here to stay… as if it ever left!

“The most memorable fashion trend of the “Roaring ’20s” was undoubtedly “the  flapper” look. The flapper dress was functional and flattened the bust line rather than accentuating it.”

Costume designer and wife of Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, collaborated with Muiccia Prada for a lot of the costumes for the film. The diamond headpieces, pearl bracelets, art deco jewelry, and cloche hats paint the picture of elegance and pure decadence. Judging by the stills of the movie, people in the 1920’s knew a thing or two about parties, and  how to arrive in style wherever they went.

What are your thoughts on the fashions of The Great Gatsby?

Will you be dressed in your best flapper attire this weekend?
