SHOE PORN: FALL’S FABULOUS FOOTWEAR

3 Sep

Fall's Fabulous Footwear

Brace yourself fashionistas, summer has sizzled away and fall has fallen upon us. I don’t know about you, but I am definitely looking forward to the new season. No offense to summer but there’s something about fall that just makes me feel all warm and fashionable inside. So without further delay let’s take a look at this season’s fabulous footwear, or what I like to call SHOE PORN!

PEEK-A-BOOTS

Peep toe aren’t just for heels anymore. Normally referred to as sandal boots, these daring darlings are a chic alternative to the basic boot and were spotted on the runways of Phillip Lim, Jason Wu and many others. Wear them to the office or a night on the town, with tights for the winter, or without for fall. Rain, sleet, or snow these peek-a-boots will withstand the weather and give you a real reason to show off your fall colored pedicure.

LADYLIKE LACE-UPS

Sugar and spice and everything nice! It was all about lace ups on the fall runways, a foreshadowing of the season to come. Lace up boots and heels will be on the feet of every woman because it offers two things: class and sass. And what lady could live without that?

PRINTED POINTY PUMPS

Printed Pointy Pumps, say that 3 times fast! Prints have proven to withstand the test of time and pointy pumps are a constant favorite, so it’s no wonder that the 3 have merged. From the classic leopard to the fun floral and the newly favorite plaid, prints will always be a signature staple that will never go out of style.

IVY LEAGUE LOAFERS

Class is definitely in session and only the stylish will make the honor roll. But seriously, who knew schoolgirl chic would become a fashion statement?! If we learned anything from the runways of Tommy Hilfiger and Chanel it’s that loafers and heels with tassels and wingtips are going to rule the sidewalks. Finally, all the episodes of watching and studying the wardrobe of Gossip Girl have finally paid off!

THE BOLD, THE BADDEST, AND THE BOOTIFUL

Not a fan of the Ivy League Prep? Then perhaps the street chic shoes seen on the runways of Saint Laurent ParisVersace and Prabal Gurung will satisfy your inner bad girl. From over the knee boots to booties, edginess reigns supreme with details like spikes, studs, chains, and buckles. Pair them with leather pants or a little black dress and you are sure to turn heads!

DESIGNER OF THE MONTH: PHILLIP LIM

1 Sep

3.1_Phillip_Lim_logo_RGB

Designer, Phillip Lim had no idea how big his name was going to be when he debuted his first fall collection in February 2005. Fast- forward to 2013 and 3.1 Phillip Lim is seen on the bodies of celebrities, in countless issues of Vogue, and on September 15, the clothing racks of Target.

Born in Thailand in 1973, Lim had no idea that designing was his calling. “I never equated the love of clothes with being a fashion designer. In fact, being a fashion designer was not in my universe, it was only about how clothes made me feel and the potential I saw in changing the clothes I owned. I can remember as early as 8 years old, picking out my own clothes, asking my mother to alter the clothes I had, and the passion I felt when I would have the perfect outfit.” That passion led him to become the creative genius that singlehandedly transformed the world of fashion by offering designer quality pieces at contemporary prices.

PhillipLim

Lim took on an internship at Katayone Adeli which, later, turned into a job as a design assistant. From there he went on to design for Paul Frank Industries before launching Development in 2000 with business partners Andy Crane and Stuart Gaddis. Development was a small label created for the girl in her twenties who appreciates a more simple design with easy shapes and basic colors. Lim spent his weekends working out of a garage to build the line he helped create, the first collection brought in six figures worth of orders, a definite premonition of the many successes to come.

4 years and some creative differences later, Lim had ended his tenure with Development. He was unemployed for a mere 24 hours when he received a call and plane ticket to New York from longtime friend, and CEO of a textile manufacturing company that worked with Development, Wen Zhou. 3 days, a taxi cab, and $750,000 later 3.1 Phillip Lim was born, the 3.1 symbolized their age at the time.

Wen Zhou and Phillip Lim

3.1 Phillip Lim debuted in February 2005, showcasing a fall collection that instantly won over journalists and buyers alike. After the success of the fall line, Lim created an accessories collection in September of the same year. From that point on the successes were one after another for the label, with Lim collecting countless awards. Buyers were filling up boutiques and department stores, within six months, sales reached $2.8 million, everyone wanted a piece of his “classic, but twisted” style. Along with the womenswear and accessories line, he also launched menswear, childrenswear, swimwear, lingerie, and even an organic clothing line aptly titled, Go Green Go.

Target has recently joined in on the fun, with a long awaited collaboration, 5 years in the making. 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target is set to debut September 15, and the line is already predicted to be a sell out. Which should come as no surprise for the modest, and stylish visionary that is Phillip Lim.

FASHION WEARABOUTS: THE 2013 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

27 Aug

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards took place Sunday night in Brooklyn at The Barclays Center, and it got me to wonder. Why does MTV still do this show when they don’t even play videos anymore? And secondly, is this really what people consider music??  I only got through an hour in an half, right after Justin Timberlake, before shutting it off. I just couldn’t torture my eyes and ears any longer. What I can say is that there was a lot of borrowing going on amongst some of the star entertainers. So without further delay, let’s get into the MESS or YES fashions of the VMAs.2013-mtv-vmas-ciara

ciara Beyonce1

Ciara showed up wearing Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci Fall Couture 2010. If this looks familiar it’s because Beyoncé wore the same dress last year at The 2012 Met Ball. Apparently, Ciara fell in love with the dress back in 2010 and always dreamt of wearing it. It was a risky move considering someone else wore it first. However, Ciara pulled it off quite nicely, dare I say, it actually looks better on her. YES!

selenagomez

Selena Gomez is becoming quite the fashionista and I’m loving every minute of it!! She looks stunning in Atelier Versace Fall 2013. This dress just so happened to be one of my favorite looks during the haute couture Paris show! YES!!!!  This is how you transition from child star to young lady. Miley take note!!

ritaora

Another favorite look of mine came from Rita Ora, she wore Alexandre Vauthier Couture Fall 2013. Now if you are an avid reader of Miss Monet, you’ll recall that I wrote a review praising the entire collection and I stated that I could see Rita Ora in a few pieces from this line. Apparently, I got my wish!! YES!! Check out my review here http://missmonet.net/2013/07/05/fashion-week-alexandre-vauthier-fall-couture-20132014/

katyperry grillz

Katy Perry wore an Emanuel Ungaro dress to the raunchy festivities. If this looks familiar, it’s because Coco Rocha wore the longer version to the 2013 Met Ball, see I told you there was a lot of borrowing going on.  Katy did her best to make it her own, although I appreciate the effort Katy, you tarnished the entire look with that tacky grill in your mouth. MESS!!

taylorswift

Taylor Swift looked like old Hollywood glamour in a navy Herve Leger gown. I really enjoyed seeing this on her,  the hair, jewelry and red nails only added more elegance to it. YES!!

ladygaga mtv vmas

Apparently Lady Gaga had dinner with The Addams Family before she hit the red carpet. Mother Monster dazzled her legion of fans in a gown from Prabal Gurung and a long black wig from the Morticia Addams collection. MESS!

Lady Gaga performs1

Lady Gaga performs

Houdini ain’t got nothing on Gaga! She did 3 or 4, who knows cause I stopped counting, wardrobe changes during her performance of her new single, Applause. The barely there little mermaid costume was what she kept on for the duration of the show. She danced, sat and shimmied in a thong the entire night. However, the real star was not Gaga, it was her backside. Kind of hard not to miss it. The girl does her squats, either that or she’s secretly related to the Kardashians.  Costume was a MESS! Her butt was a YES!

Apparently Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez agree.

Apparently Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez agree.

mileycyrus

Fresh out the Disney Channel box is the Twerk Queen formerly known as Miley Cyrus. Miss Cyrus caused quite a stir on Sunday night, the first being on the red carpet. Miley, seen here wearing Dolce & Gabbana, borrowed two things. 1) Gwen Stefani’s hair style circa 1997 and 2) Kanye West’s teddy bear from the College Dropout album for her raunchy performance of We Can’t Stop.

mileycyrus1

She started out with a Chuckie-E-Cheese looking leotard and soon stripped down to some nude undies for her performance of Blurred Lines with Robin Thicke, who borrowed his suit from Beetlejuice.

mileycyrus2

I never understood why child stars feel they have to do the most outrageous things to prove they aren’t children anymore. We get it Miley you are no longer Hannah Montana, you don’t have to keep shoving it in our faces (pun intended). It was in extreme poor taste to perform this and it really made me question MTV. How did this make it past rehearsals?? This performance was so bad it made Britney Spears’ 2007 VMA performance look like a work of art. This was a MESS for Miley. A MESS for Robin. And a MESS for MTV.

justin timberlake

The man who basically stole and saved the show, was the “President of Pop”, Justin Timberlake. I’m not even going get into to his look, I’m already giving him a YES! Very bias I know, but it’s my blog. With that being said, every 90’s kid around the world eagerly anticipated the reunion of *NSYNC. Thankfully a reunion did happen, unfortunately if you blinked you probably missed it.

justin-timberlake-nsync

Wearing Suits but no Ties.

NSYNC-VMAs-2013

I hadn’t been this excited since the Destiny Child reunion at the Super Bowl, so it was kind of a bummer when they performed together for 2 minutes. No real medley was played for the fans, but maybe that was for the best considering the guys clearly had a hard time keeping up with JT. All in all, it was great to see them back together and great to see Justin Timberlake perform for 15 minutes, and pick up his well deserved award. YES!

By the way, the fact that I can remember all of *NSYNC’s and JT’s songs proves I’m getting old. When did that happen?!!

Did you torture yourself and watch the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards?

Was the show and the fashions a MESS or a YES?

MODEL MOMENT: NAOMI, LINDA, KATE, AND CHRISTY COVER INTERVIEW MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2013

25 Aug

Interview-September-2013

Have my eyes deceived me? Is this a sign of covers to come? I want to scream with excitement because I can finally post a Model Moment segment with real life models!!!!!! And these aren’t just any models…. these are SUPERMODELS!! The supermodel rat pack, which consisted of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell, strutted and posed their way to the top of the high fashion runway model food chain in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Kate Moss was apart of it as well, but I will always have a soft spot for the model trinity of Turlington, Evangelista and Campbell.

I cannot wait to get my hands on one! In order for this to continue people have to buy the issues to show these publications that you’d rather see a model than a celeb on the covers. W and Interview got it right, this is what September issues should look like!

Is this the return of models on magazines? And what’s next in the wonderful world of fashion… actual designers instead of the celebrity ones?!  A girl can dream can’t she….

FASHION FLASHBACK/FASTFORWARD: AALIYAH’S INFLUENCE

25 Aug

By now you should know that I am and have always been a fan of Aaliyah, just check out the latest Spotlight post and you will see why. Judging from the countless singers and their styles as of late it’s easy to see that they are fans too. They say “imitation is the highest form of flattery”, so in honor of Aaliyah, let’s take a look at how her style has resurrected in today’s fashions.

1) The pic on the right is a still from Aaliyah’s video “We Need A Resolution”, premiering in May of 2001. Fast-forward to The MTV Video Music Awards 2001 and you will see Britney Spears dancing with a python during her performance of “I’m A Slave For You”.  It hadn’t even been two weeks since her passing and her style was already being mimicked.

Britney Spears & Aaliyah

2) Have you seen Rihanna’s style lately? And not to mention her upcoming collection for The River Island. It’s very easy to see that Bad Gal RiRI is a major fan of the 90’s tomboyish look that Aaliyah made oh so popular.

4) Canadian singer Keisha Chante was picked to play Babygirl in a rumored biopic that, thankfully, never came about. ( No offense to Keisha, but I typically hate biopics on deceased celebrities. I feel Hollywood should leave their legacies alone.) Anyway, it’s easy to see why they chose her, they’re not twins, but you would definitely do a double take if you saw Miss Chante.

There have been countless similarities in style and music from fans to celebrities alike. From makeup tutorials on YouTube to style inspirations on Pinterest and Tumblr, there’s simply not enough time in the day to discuss it all. Fashion is like a boomerang, it always comes back, even the bad ones that you wish would stay gone. However, style is one that some have and others can only mimic. When you got it, you got it. And Aaliyah definitely had it.

SPOTLIGHT: AALIYAH – A STYLE ICON THEN & NOW

21 Aug

aaliyah

This Sunday marks the 12th anniversary of the death of Aaliyah. In honor of Miss Haughton, this edition of Spotlight pays tribute to her stylish influence then and now.

At just 22, Aaliyah had accomplished more than her peers, having successfully managed to transition from music to acting. Her music, which consisted of three albums, was what she was known for, however, her style was not to be missed. Aaliyah had a magical way of innovating trends, which are still very relevant today.  As she matured so did her music and ultimately her style as well. It is so easy to spot her influence in the artists of today, such as DrakeRita Ora, and Rihanna to name a few. I’d like to think that if she were here she’d be a triple threat, in music, acting, and fashion. She is a trendsetter in every sense of the word. Let’s take a look at 3 distinct trademarks that made Aaliyah who she was and what she will always be remembered for.

HAIR OVER THE EYE.

You can’t think of Aaliyah without thinking of her signature trademark. She had the best hair in the music industry, even now, no one’s hair has ever come close! I was always fascinated with how full, healthy, and layered her hair was. And she always kept things interesting by cover her eye, giving a mysterious and sexy vibe without even trying.

Aaliyah2

Aaliyah3

  SUNGLASSES.

Aaliyah was always spotted with a stylish pair of shades, adding more mystery to her private persona.

Aaliyah4

MASTER OF MENSWEAR

What made Aaliyah stand out from other songtresses of the 90’s were her fashions, “street but sweet”  described her music and her style as well.  She had effortlessly mastered the craft of appealing to all sexes, with a crafty ability of wearing tom boyish attire while still remaining sexy and sweet, a feat that not many have been able to carry. She was known for her baggy jeans, mid driff baring tops, bandanas, and boxer briefs. Now, if you have paid any attention to the trends as of late, all of what she was wearing back then is now back in style.

“I stay true to myself and my style and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original.”

Aaliyah8

Aaliyah6

Aaliyah9

This post is bittersweet for me. I really admired Aaliyah so spotlighting her influence is an easy one, however putting together a montage of her life brings forth sadness. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years. I, as well as all of you, can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. For me and the many people of my generation, her death was hard to grasp. Other than Biggie and Tupac, we had never had a young, female artist die in such a tragic way. It’s a constant reminder that death has no age limit and to cherish the time you have because you never know when that time is up.

One of my all time favorite pictures of her. Taken from the 'We Need A Resolution' video. Stunning!

On August 25th, as you reminisce about Aaliyah, play her music, watch her videos, and search through countless photos of her on the internet, take the time out to say a little prayer for her mother and brother, as well as, the 8 other victim’s families. This day is hard for her fans, but extremely hard for them as well. I leave you with a poem that her brother, Rashad Haughton, dedicated to her.

MODEL MOMENT: THE SEPTEMBER ISSUES 2013

19 Aug

It is often said that “September is the January of the fashion world”.  Ahh, such an exciting time! Let’s take a look at a few of the magazines I recently picked up.

I was pleased to see Sarah Jessica Parker flashing her dazzling smile for Terry Richardson in a glittery Marc Jacobs dress. Very Carrie Bradshaw!

Harper's Bazaar US

Judging by the cover, I didn’t think the photos of Ms. Barrymore would be that great. But thankfully I was wrong. Her photos were wonderful, shot by Michelangelo Di Battista and styled by Melissa Rubini.

Instyle

I normally never buy Lucky, but that changed  when I saw Serena van der Woodsen on the cover!  Mrs. Ryan Reynolds never disappoints in the fashion department and this issue proved that. Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier and styled by Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele.

Lucky Magazine

I like Jennifer Lawrence, I really do. This cover on the other hand… I could do without. Vogue is the original, the Holy Grail in the fashion world, so why on earth would this shot make the cover?! Where’s the fashion? Where’s the style? This cover does nothing for the Oscar winner’s unique beauty. It looks like she took a senior picture, that just so happened to be fabulous enough to make the cover of Vogue.

Vogue

I have to give major props to W Magazine for putting a real model on the cover of their September Issue. I mean seriously, my Model Moment segments are usually filled with actresses or singers on the covers of magazines and ads. There’s nothing wrong with that, however I feel we need to see models back on the covers of our favorite fashion publications. Thankfully, W read my mind. Mert Alas & Marcus photographed Cara Delevingne and her fabulously arched eyebrows for the coveted cover, wearing Marc Jacobs.

Happy Reading!

MODEL MOMENT: SCARLETT JOHANSSON COVERS HARPER’S BAZAAR AUSTRALIA SEPTEMBER 2013

8 Aug

Harper's Bazaar Australia 2013

This cover is STUNNING! I saw this earlier and was literally more blown away than Scarlett was. September issues are known to be the best in the fashion industry and this cover proves it. Scarlett Johansson + Dolce & Gabbana dress = A magazine that I will definitely be buying!

Enjoy!

DESIGNER OF THE MONTH: BALMAIN

8 Aug

Balmain logo

One of my favorite fashion brands is BALMAIN, so it is only fitting that the Parisian fashion house be the first designer featured in the newest segment called Designer Of The Month

Pierre Balmain

Balmain wasn’t always the edgy, rocker chic fashion house that we have grown to love, long before the embellished blazers, Pierre Balmain, along with Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, had been credited with reinventing haute couture after World War II. The Parisian prodigy once said that “dressmaking is the architecture of movement”, which comes as no surprise being that his elegantly, feminine looks were fashion favorites among European royalty and Hollywood’s A-list.

Taken in 1954, a model poses in double-breasted suit, tie, and wide brimmed hat by Balmain.

Opening his first fashion house was a no brainer for “The King of French Fashion”, Balmain started in 1945 showcasing long, bell shaped skirts with small waists. In the 1950’s Balmain became a brand people were familiar with and with good reason, the Parisian label started popping up in the U.S. with his ready to wear collections, and Mr. Balmain had singlehandedly transformed the stole into a trendy piece for day and evening wear. Balmain had gained a reputation that he could design anything from tailored suits and elegant evening gowns to perfumes.

Erik Mortenson took over the house in 1982 after the death of Mr. Balmain, and by the early nineties Oscar de la Renta lent his creative abilities, keeping the tradition of Balmain’s classic, luxuriously elegant designs alive. The start of the new millennium brought new changes to the legendary house, one was with a new creative director and the other was the new vision the director brought along. Christophe Decarnin led Balmain to the modern, edgier path we now know it for. Taking over in 2005, Decarnin reinvented the French fashion house, introducing it to a much younger audience that became infatuated with the designer’s chic futuristic vision. Even with the hefty price tags, $6,000 for select jeans and $2,000 for a t-shirt with holes, BALMAINIA had struck amongst young, rich fashionistas proving to be more than just a fashion fad.

Embellished jackets became a Balmain staple when Christophe Decarnin took over. Balmain jackets were a key player that made fashionistas catch Balmainia fever!

Olivier Rousteing, after working with Decarnin, took over the ranks in 2011. There was much skepticism regarding Rousteing, people feared he wouldn’t be able to achieve the success that the label had with Decarnin. However, his first collection, Resort 2011, showed critics that Rousteing was no Decarnin, and by the spring that theory was further proven. In just the span of 2 collections, Rousteing had successfully managed to run a legendary label, putting his own spin on designs while never forgetting the history of the house.

Balmain Today. A look from the Resort 2014 collection.

Rousteing has a magical of way of incorporating class and timelessness back into the brand, while at the same time still having an edgy look. He is a master at catering to the many characteristics of a woman. “I think “classic” is the right word. I want to go to something more timeless. Something that goes for the future. What I love from the old French house, it’s not seasonal. It’s something that stays. That’s my goal for Balmain. Keeping the sexiness but a bit dressier. For a woman who’s more chic, [to] expand from the woman who was before”. And that’s exactly what he’s doing.

Olivier Rousteing Quote: http://www.style.com/stylefile/2011/12/more-flash-than-trash-olivier-rousteing-at-balmain/
